Translatable Skills and closing the skills-gap: How can veterans help?

There is no denying ex-military personnel bring intrinsic value and skills to the workplace, but sometimes those skills do not always translate well onto a CV.

Military personnel are trained to be elite leaders, learning teamwork, organisational skills, to name but a few, often under extreme pressure in unique environments. Time within the military can develop leadership, project management and critical thinking skills that develop military personnel into logistical planners, strong team members and agile thinkers, within a range of industries - in particular the world of cybersecurity, data analytics and AI. And with a notable skills gap within these expanding fields, who better to close the gap than skilled, adaptable military leaders?

Ex-military personnel have acquired a diverse range of skills - especially ‘soft’ skills, such as:

  • Values driven

  • Analytical & problem solving skills

  • Ability to work calmly under pressure

  • Interpersonal skills

  • Negotiation skills

  • A good work ethic & ability to get things done to high standards

  • Team skills

  • Leadership

  • Adaptability & resourcefulness

SaluteMyJob has always been passionate about showcasing the skills military personnel can offer employers, nurturing these intrinsic qualities to enable successful careers in Civvy street. A unique way we are doing this is through our innovative Pathways Programme, which bridges the gap between military life and a rewarding career in the burgeoning fields of cybersecurity, data analytics and AI.

Pathways Programme

Delivered in collaboration with industry leaders IBM and Abertay University and supported by funding from the UK and Scottish Governments and Nominet’s Click Start initiative, at the heart of our innovative programme is a commitment to facilitating a progressive transition into the civilian workforce, supported by ‘Forces Friendly’ employers offering rewarding careers in their most important and fastest growing roles.

This programme serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of people from the Armed Forces community, proving that their military experience is not just a chapter but a stepping stone towards fulfilling civilian careers. We offer those within the Armed Forces Community the opportunity to nurture their own unique skills forged within their military Service and acquire the skills, knowledge and practical experience to compete strongly for some of the most demanding jobs. And with work placements a part of the programme, employers have the unique opportunity to witness the dedication, adaptability, and technical skills that veterans bring to the table, enabling the talented leaders within the military to eventually become leaders within the field of cybersecurity, data analytics and AI.

Andrew Jackson, Managing Director of SaluteMyJob, said: “Our goal, alongside employer partners, is to make the most of the veterans' transferable skills and enable them to realise opportunities in the digital and cybersecurity roles where there is the greatest demand. For employers, we offer the opportunity to engage with, support and gain free access to high quality, skilled people from across the Armed Forces community, in return for their in-kind support to the programme."
