Military Insight Days: A stepping stone to choosing your future career path

Military insight days are a great way to give you a feel for an industry or organisation, especially when you are still weighing up which career or sector might be for you. A number of leading companies across the UK host insight days designed specifically for the military community and are invaluable in learning more about an industry and the career paths it can offer. Think of them as being one of the first stepping stones to your future career.

The structure of the day will depend on the organisation but you may get a chance to tour one of the main offices or sites, speak to ex-military employees and a chance to learn about opportunities, training programmes and placements on offer. Insight days are also a fantastic opportunity to network, so make sure you go prepared!

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR AN ARMED FORCES INSIGHT DAY?

Like any event that involves networking we advise you to prepare as much as you can, you don’t know who you might meet and how they could help you in the future. Here are some short tips to get you ready for your first insight day:

1. RESEARCH

Sit down and do your research. Don’t just google the organisation running the insight day - check their social media, in particular their LinkedIn page. See any relevant articles they have shared, goals for 2023 - anything that may help you open up a conversation and also help you decide whether the organisation is the right fit for you.

2. PREPARE ELEVATOR SPEECH

It may seem slightly alien to do but it really can benefit you to have a brief introduction prepared when you are meeting somebody new. Just a short synopsis of your background and experience that wouldn’t last longer than an elevator ride!

3. BE PROFESSIONAL

It goes without saying to be professional, but remember an insight day could be a potential gateway to a job interview.

4. BE ORGANISED

Make sure you remember who you have spoken to, write everything down, any contacts you have made or future events coming up so you can plan ahead for the next step.

5. FOLLOW UP

If you have made a valuable connection at the insight day, follow up with an email, engage through social media. Be proactive - you never know where the contact may lead.

Many companies across the UK run regular insight days including the NHS, FDM and Barclays. It is worth keeping an eye on the CTP events list as they are frequently updated with a range of industries sharing opportunities throughout the year.
