Recognising the benefits of recruiting from the ex-forces community, the NHS has long looked to encourage forces leavers to think about a career with what is by far the biggest employer in the UK. The NHS Step into Health initiative provides a dedicated pathway for the Armed Forces community to access numerous career opportunities available in the NHS. What is Step into Health?
Step into Health offers an access route into employment and other career development opportunities within the NHS to members of the Armed Forces community.
The programme recognises the transferable skills and cultural values that Armed Forces personnel have developed, and how these skills and values are compatible with working in the NHS.
NHS organisations can pledge to the Step into Health programme to publicly support the recruitment of members of the Armed Forces community into the NHS.
Aims
The aim of the programme is to highlight the many career opportunities available, particularly non-clinical roles, to the Armed Forces community and to support them in gaining employment within the NHS.
NHS Employers supports organisations in adopting the programme, ensuring that Step into Health is embedded into recruitment strategies and workforce supply routes.
Background
The Step into Health programme was established in 2014 by Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with The Royal Foundation and Walking With The Wounded.
The programme was piloted across five trusts in 2015. Following the success of this pilot, NHS Employers was appointed to roll out the programme nationally in 2017.
