Service Engineer

Location: Newbury
Salary: £14-17 per hour depending on experience

Role Summary

To ensure that our clients machines are maintained and serviced in line with company policies and procedures, and to customer satisfaction.

The successful application will need to be prepared to travel to Client sites and stay away from home as business needs dictate. The role involves weekend and on-call work.

The Company

Our client is the largest supplier of Road Rail Vehicles in the UK. With over 600 people involved in their business, our client delivers RRV Hire, POS Services and Principal Contracting services across the Mainland UK. They have 10 depots nationwide covering all routes, giving them the ability to deliver an exceptional local service, backed by a national fleet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out instructions with respect to inspection, repair, service and maintenance of all Plant machinery and equipment for hire and resale by the Company.

  • Ensuring that all machines are serviced and ready for use in a clean and safe working order.

  • Maintain a good relationship with internal and external Customers.

  • Promote outside parts repair and service work.

  • Maintaining accurate and up to date service and maintenance records for auditing, using the appropriate computer or paper based system.

  • Liaising with Procurement for parts ordering, consignment stock and servicing kits, allocating costs to machine fleet numbers.

  • On call duties – you will be required to be on call to assist in maintenance work when necessary.

  • Must adhere to all Health and Safety Standards and Regulations, PPE requirements at all times and make certain familiar with these.

  • Be able to prioritise work tasks and take on urgent work tasks not accounted for.

  • Seek improvements in work tasks and relate these to Engineering Foreman.

  • Ability to engage with people at all levels of the business in a courteous, professional and competent manner.

  • Natural ability to spot and address problems before becoming critical to the business and resolution orientated.

  • Grasps technical information easily and is able to relate information clearly to others.

  • Must be able to work with a host of stakeholders and be up to date with regulations and standards that affect the Rail Industry.

  • Ability to resolve problems in a calm and effective manner, knowing when to escalate issues to a higher authority.

  • Must be able to work on own initiative and part of a team pushing to be the best at what they do.

  • Must possess excellent planning and problem solving skills.

  • Be able to follow instructions and adhere to procedures at all times.

  • Be confident and to ask for clarification where there is uncertainty.

  • Be resilient and take on responsibility while demonstrating integrity and honesty in performing job role.

Qualifications & skills

  • Ideally have rail Industry experience.

  • Sound mechanical knowledge of heavy Plant machinery, including excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks etc; RRV preferred.

  • Indentured Apprentice or NVQ Level 2 in Mobile Plant Engineering or military equivalent.

  • Computer literate for Email, Word, Excel, Database and systems related packages.

  • Awareness of Health and Safety issues and responsibilities.

  • Ideally hold a valid PTS card endorsed with AC and/or DC lines (DCCR).

  • Ideally hold a valid Sentinel Smart card.

  • Emergency First Aid preferable.

  • Manual Handling.

  • Working at Height.

  • Good standard of numeracy & literacy.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong personal integrity is essential.

  • Be prepared to support problem solving when requested.

  • Excellent Customer Service essential.
