On Wednesday 30th September, SaluteMyJob and Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce launched a new Scottish Veterans' Employment and Training Service (SVETS). SVETS is a unique, collaborative programme providing a recruitment and advice service to employers, and an employment, training and education service to veterans. Delivered in partnership with Veterans Scotland, SVETS is designed to enable employers’ access to ex-military talent, address skills shortages and help drive businesses forward.
The event was a great success with many employers and organisations coming over to Stirling to support the launch of our new Service. Our business breakfast kicked off with a few words from Jim Wilson, Veterans Scotland, Brig Paul Harkness and Cdr Eric Fraser each talking about the benefits of hiring veterans.
Brig (Retd) Andrew Jackson, Managing Director of SaluteMyJob then finished the morning with a compelling workshop, describing the ways in which SVETS will help bridge the gap and overcome barriers between Scottish employers and ex-military jobseekers.
The evening reception began by hearing from Dogfi.sh, a provider of enterprise level scalable mobile solutions and strategies. Dogf.ish spoke about their experiences of hiring former Service men and women and the positive results veterans have brought to their company.
General Sir Nick Parker expressed his passion on the struggle that ex-military people are facing on their transition to civvy street.
The former commander-in-chief also demonstrated his enthusiasm on this subject through an article in The Daily Telegraph, Scotland, explaining the difficulty that veterans face when looking for new opportunities outside the military, and how our new SVETS service will help smooth the transition between military and civilian life.
Keith Brown MSP, Veteran's Secretary ended the day with his views on the subject.
Furthermore, General Sir Nick Parker was then featured in The Evening Standard 'General warns veterans' toughest fight can be finding a civilian job' where again he stresses the skills that ex-military people can bring to a business and how we can help.
All in all, a great start to a great service, and we look forward to helping more Scottish employers find the talent that they are looking for, and help ease the struggle of transitioning and ex-service men and women into employment.
