An Insight into the work of Recruit for Spouses by founder Heledd Kendrick

Recruit for Spouses was launched in 2009 by Army wife, Heledd Kendrick.

“I was meeting wives and partners with all this talent, and yet they had given up so much to follow their serving partner around the world.”

Heledd decided to create a platform on which to promote the military spousal community by introducing employers to the vast talent pool within it and educating them on the numerous benefits of employing a military spouse.

“We find a lot of spouses struggling to resume their careers or begin new ones due to a lack of confidence in their skills after a period of time out of work.

We encourage spouses to reach out to enterprises such as ourselves.  Our team is made up solely of military spouses, which can be the light at the end of the tunnel that they need to see.

We understand the realities and are able to offer a host of opportunities such as career development, CV management, coaching and mentorship programmes, a range of educational online webinars and events, as well as a vast industry network that they can tap into.

Our lifestyles dictate that we are constantly on the move, managing the majority of the childcare and household administration, and striving to create a balance for all involved.  In previous years, employers have seen this as a disruption to common business practices, however we are now seeing a grand shift in this mindset.

Employ the whole person, look at them as an individual, support them if they need to leave work early to collect their child or if they need to work from home one day a week.

Resilience, resourcefulness and reliability are qualities possessed by all military spouses and are skills that employers value highly.

We say to employers, ‘Employ the whole person, look at them as an individual, support them if they need to leave work early to collect their child or if they need to work from home one day a week’.  If they can support that, they will get so much back.

We encourage spouses to expand their thinking in terms of career options and we are seeing a whole new wave of opportunities being explored by military spouses - from entrepreneurship to work from home roles that cater to the flexibility often required by a military family.  We are proud to be able to support and provide the tools to achieve this.

My career highlight has been getting through the tough times.  You never stop learning in business, and as a social enterprise we are forging a new path.  Most businesses go through a period of change and to still be here is our biggest success to date.

Partnership is the way forward.  SaluteMyJob stand out from the crowd because they understand the difficulties veterans face when leaving the Armed Forces.  Like us, they have an approach which is different.  The work they did with Deloitte and FiMT (Forces in Mind Trust) on veterans was a good demonstration of how they stand apart from others in their space, and they are a social business of which I am a big fan.”
